Aussie sprint sensation Gout Gout has won the 100m and 200m event at the Queensland athletics championships and legendary sports commentator Bruce McAvaney made the trip to watch the superstar. The 19-year-old was competing in another meet in 2026 after Gout ran 10.00 last month in the 100m.

Gout won the 100m event at the Queensland meet on Saturday, before competing in the 200m event a day later. And in front of McAvaney, Gout managed to edge out Rory Easton to win the race in 20.42.

Easton was only a metre behind Gout who pushed the sprinter all the way on the back straight. Easton pushed Gout all weekend. Unfortunately, Gout was battling a cold ahead of the meet and his 200m time was well below his best.

The sprinter recorded the Australian and Oceania record of 20.02 last year, but wasn’t able to achieve the feat again while recovering from the cold. His 100m time of 10.20 on Saturday was also well short if his best time, set last month, as he ran in wet and windy conditions. Regardless, Gout was the main attraction at the meet and won both his event.

And McAvaney flew in to watch the sprinter, not as a commentator, but as an athletics fan. Speaking to The Herald Sun, McAvaney said he has grown close to Gout’s team and is a keen supporter of the 19-year-old sensation.

“I’m fascinated with his journey and I just wanted to come up in a non-broadcast sort of way,’’ McAvaney said to the publication. “I just wanted to see what would happen this afternoon. I feel close to his family and I feel connected in a way. It’s just an afternoon off. I wanted to come up as a fan and see what he might so without having my headphones on. It’s beautiful. That’s what it’s about.’’

While Gout was still impressive on the weekend, his 100m time was well below his best. Gout edged closer to breaking the famed 10-second mark after recording 10.00 (+0.9) seconds at the Dane Bird-Smith Shield Meet at QSAC last month.
