Can the MSI Katana 15 HX handle high-refresh QHD gaming?

I recently bought the MSI Katana 15 HX because I wanted a portable gaming laptop that could handle high-refresh-rate QHD gaming. Initially, I was excited about its specs, especially the 165Hz display and the RTX 4070 GPU. However, after a few weeks of playing demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Battlefield, I noticed some issues.

The game performance is decent, but I feel like the display isn’t as smooth as I expected at 1440p. Sometimes, the frame rates fluctuate, and I wonder if the screen’s refresh rate is truly capable of delivering the smooth experience I was hoping for. I also read some reviews mentioning that the display might not be fully optimized for high-refresh-rate QHD gaming.

Has anyone else used this laptop for high-refresh-rate gaming at QHD resolution? Does it actually deliver on smooth gameplay, or am I likely to face these performance inconsistencies? Would love to hear some real-world experiences or suggestions before I decide to keep or return it.

I've been using the MSI Katana 15 HX for a few months. It performs well for most games at QHD, but frame rate dips can happen if you're pushing settings high. Make sure V-Sync is off for the best experience.

Alex, do you think the display's refresh rate really makes a difference? I heard some laptops have high refresh rate screens but don't utilize them fully.

I've seen reports that some units have firmware issues that limit the refresh rate. Has anyone checked if your device's display is running at 165Hz in game? Use tools like MSI Afterburner to monitor it.

In my experience, the Katana 15 HX is pretty good, but I noticed that at 1440p, you need to tweak settings for a smooth experience. Lowering some graphics options helped me.

I have the same model, and I can confirm it handles QHD gaming quite smoothly at high refresh rates. Just make sure you're running the latest GPU drivers and Windows updates.

Rachel, do you think the display really hits 165Hz? Sometimes, I feel like it's not as smooth as my 144Hz monitor.

It does at least in my experience. You can verify in the display settings or MSI Dragon Center. Also, some games might not be optimized to push the display's full refresh rate.

Is it worth it to upgrade to this laptop if I mainly want high-refresh QHD gaming? Or should I wait for newer models with better display tech?

Emma, I've been using this laptop for a month. It handles most games well, but if you're picky about display quality, consider testing it in-store or reading detailed reviews.

I think the laptop performs well overall, but the key is to optimize game settings. Also, ensure you're using a high-quality HDMI or DisplayPort cable to get the best refresh rate output.

Can someone confirm if the laptop's display is genuinely 165Hz or just marketed as such? I’ve seen mixed info online.

Ethan, MSI advertises it as 165Hz, and I’ve tested it with refresh rate monitoring tools. It does reach that in most cases, but some games or apps might limit it.

I had a similar experience with frame rate fluctuations. I think it might be more about optimizing in-game settings rather than hardware limitations.

Is there a way to improve the display's performance? Maybe through BIOS updates or configuration tweaks?

Megan, updating BIOS and graphics drivers can sometimes improve performance. Also, check your power settings—set to high performance for gaming.

For high-refresh QHD gaming, do you think an external monitor might give a better experience? The laptop's display is good but not perfect.

Laura, totally agree. An external 144Hz or 165Hz monitor can provide a more consistent and smoother experience, especially for competitive gaming.
