Collingwood legend Swan has questioned the level of celebrations from Carlton considering they only beat last year’s 17th-place team by four points on Thursday night. But Blues coach Michael Voss has moved to explain why the win over Richmond was such a relief for his under-siege and ‘targeted’ team.

Carlton held on to win 10.15 (75) to 9.17 (71) on Thursday night after the rebuilding Richmond threatened a huge boilover. If not for some wayward kicking in front of goal, the Tigers likely would have won.

Richmond only had five victories last season and finished second-last, but put up a massive fight against the heavily-backed Carlton. Voss was spotted down on the boundary-line high-fiving and hugging players after the full-time siren, which raised a few eyebrows considering the win was more of a great escape than great performance.

Swan wrote online: “Celebrating that win is one of the reasons they won’t compete for flags anytime soon. Can’t be happy with that. That’s not a win that’s just collecting 4 points. Big difference.”

A Carlton fan responded: “We didn’t win. Richmond lost.” Another wrote: “If that’s the best the Blues have got it’s going to be a long long year for them.” However another disagreed and pointed to a number of changes in personnel that Carlton are still getting used to.
