F1 great David Coulthard has revealed Oscar Piastri’s tongue-in-cheek comment moments before the start of the China GP that backfired on the Aussie driver. Piastri has endured a horror start to the F1 season having crashed his car during the formation lap ahead of the Melbourne GP, which ended his race before the green lights.

Piastri also failed to start the China GP with both McLaren cars ruled out ahead of the race. Piastri and Lando Norris were meant to start fifth and sixth on the grid, but both drivers had separate electrical issues and were pulled from the race. New regulations and engines for the 2026 season has teams trying to navigate the issues that come with the drastic changes.

McLaren, winners of last year’s constructor’ championship, have not adapted well with the changes so far. Piastri now won’t race until next month after the upcoming Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs were cancelled due to the conflict in the Middle East. And F1 great Coulthard has revealed the comment Piastri made, before the China GP, that has been a reflection of McLaren’s start to the season.

Coulthard revealed Piastri walked past him moments before the start of the race in China and joked at least he had made the grid this time around. Obviously referencing his inability to start the race in Melbourne.

Eles estão apontando o dedo para seu fornecedor de motores, que é a Mercedes Benz. Quão rápido as coisas mudam.”

Mercedes começa a temporada na pista

Com Norris e Piastri fora de competição, George Russell terminou em segundo lugar atrás de seu companheiro de equipe Kimi Antonelli, enquanto a Mercedes continuava com seu excelente início na temporada. Em mais uma reviravolta para a McLaren, a Fórmula 1 confirmou que os GPs do Bahrein e da Arábia Saudita seriam cancelados.

Isso reduziu a temporada para 22 corridas e dá ainda menos tempo para a McLaren alcançar a Mercedes. Os cancelamentos representariam um prejuízo de US$ 195 milhões para a Fórmula 1, com o Bahrein pagando cerca de US$ 78 milhões e a Arábia Saudita quase US$ 117 milhões para sediar os eventos da corrida.
