Majority of Americans Still Unfamiliar with Using AI at Work, Younger Generations Lead Adoption

Limited Adoption of AI in the Workplace Among Americans
Recent findings from a new AP-NORC poll reveal that only about 37% of American adults have utilized artificial intelligence (AI) for work-related tasks. In contrast, a larger portion—around 60%—have used AI for searching information online. This indicates that while AI tools are becoming more common in everyday information gathering, their integration into professional environments remains relatively limited.
Generational Gaps in AI Usage
The survey, conducted between July 10 and 14 with 1,437 participants, highlights significant differences across age groups. Younger Americans are leading the charge in adopting AI across various categories. For example, an impressive 74% of adults under 30 have used AI to search for information, compared to just 60% of the overall adult population.
When it comes to brainstorming and idea generation, 62% of under-30s have turned to AI tools, whereas only 20% of those aged 60 and above have done the same. These statistics reflect a clear digital divide, with younger generations embracing AI more readily than their older counterparts.
AI as a Companion: Popularity and Concerns
AI companionship remains the least popular application among adults, with only 16% having tried it. However, among younger adults under 30, the figure increases to 25%. Despite its rising popularity, AI companionship raises some concerns that aren’t fully captured in the poll. These include issues like excessive agreeability, known as sycophancy, and potential mental health risks, such as fostering delusional thinking or dependency.
