Near-perfect “powerful” thriller, hailed as ‘one of 2025’s best movies’, finds new UK streaming home
It Was Just an Accident, the acclaimed thriller from Iranian writer-director Jafar Panahi, is now streaming in the UK. Hailed as one of the best films of 2025, this is one that you won’t want to miss.
The film follows a group of former political prisoners as they come into contact with a man they suspect to be one of their chief tormentors. As the traumatic past is brought back to light, the group considers whether to exact revenge.
After having a theatrical release in December, the film is now available to stream on Mubi, where a subscription currently costs £11.99 per month. It can also be added as a channel on Prime Video for the same price, though you can get a seven-day free trial.

If you’d rather not purchase Mubi either on its own or as part of Prime Video, then you can buy the film directly from the latter. It is currently priced at £9.99, so it’s cheaper than a Mubi subscription.
Since its premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in May, where it won the prestigious Palme d’Or, It Was Just an Accident has garnered critical acclaim, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting a near-perfect approval rating of 98% from 210 reviews.
Furthermore, we at Digital Spy listed the thriller in our top 15 films of 2025, writing: “[It] is a brilliantly-acted movie that works as both a gripping thriller and a thought-provoking drama, as well as delivering one of the year’s most chilling endings.”
“It Was Just an Accident plays like an ideal melding of the filmmaker Panahi was and the filmmaker he’s been forced to become. It’s an endlessly fascinating and extraordinarily powerful work,” opined Vulture.

The Globe and Mail was also full of praise, noting: “Panahi reaches some kind of terrible career high. This is a movie born out of a lifetime that no one should have been forced to endure. And yet, the film world is stronger for the suffering.”
Once you arrive at the ultimate destination – a primal, furious cinematic scream at all the injustices that have happened in Iran and throughout the globe – you will never forget it. This is essential viewing and essential filmmaking,” wrote The San Jose Mercury News.
It Was Just an Accident is streaming now on Mubi.
