The Sydney Roosters have issued an apology and the NRL says they won’t be slapped with any official sanctions after a scoreboard move on Friday night that left the South Sydney Rabbitohs fuming. On a night that celebrated Alex Johnston breaking the NRL’s all-time try-scoring record, the Rabbitohs were left with a sour taste in their mouths.

Instead of displaying their name and logo, the scoreboards inside Allianz Stadium simply referred to them as ‘visiting team’. The Roosters have admitted it was their call to make the change, and Souths believe it was a deliberate jab over the Rabbitohs’ attempts to play home games at Allianz (which have been rejected).

Speaking on Monday afternoon, Souths CEO Blake Solly called for the NRL to hit the Roosters with an official breach notice. Solly pointed out that under the NRL operations manual, both teams have to be named on the scoreboard at every game.

“Clubs who breach the operations manual are routinely warned and fined without a complaint from the other club,” Solly said when asked if he’d made an official complaint. “For example, late kick-offs or taking too long to convert after a try.

“The rule couldn’t be clearer. I just hope it’s not one rule for the Roosters and another for the other 16 clubs.”

There was no Rabbitohs name or logo on the stadium scoreboards.

“Si esto realmente causó el nivel de preocupación sugerido, dejaremos de hacerlo. Este enfoque se tomó en el espíritu de la rivalidad, y los Roosters reconocieron y apreciaron el chiste mostrado en el partido de la NSW Cup del domingo en Redfern Oval, donde la pantalla de puntuación se refería a los Roosters como los “visitantes””.

El extremo de los Roosters, Mark Nawaqanitawase, dijo que lo encontró “divertido”, pero su compañero de equipo, Lindsay Collins, no estaba de acuerdo. “Fue suerte que ganamos”, dijo Collins. “No me gustan esas cosas. Hay que ser un buen deportista… No sé quién tenía el control, pero yo no lo habría hecho.”
