‘Outlander’ Fans, You’re Not Ready for Caitriona Balfe’s Unexpected Career News
It looks like Caitriona Balfe is expanding her work on Outlander in the best way possible.
With the final season of the Starz drama airing every Friday, fans aren’t ready to say goodbye to Caitriona and her portrayal of Claire Fraser. Ever since Caitriona first started acting in the role over a decade ago (the first episode of Outlander premiered in August 2014), she’s also become an executive producer alongside co-star Sam Heughan (who portrays Claire’s husband, Jamie Fraser). But are there any opportunities for her to flex other skills as well?
As Caitriona shared while appearing on Live With Kelly and Mark on March 6, she got the opportunity to direct the second episode of Outlander season 8, airing on Friday, March 13, 2026, on Starz. And when asked what she loved about that new role, Caitriona had nothing but high praise for it.

“Oh, it was amazing,” Caitriona stated in a clip posted on YouTube. “I think the thing that really excites me and interests me is being able to take that overview and being able to tell a multitude of stories. Because you’re sort of taking the broader view. You’re forced to pull out a little bit, which is really exciting.”
When fans discovered Caitriona’s surprise career venture for Outlander, they had to congratulate her on social media.
“Love this, LOVE HER 🥺❤️,” one person wrote on Instagram. “👏👏👏❤️❤️ She is the best,” another agreed. “Love Caitriona! ❤️,” a different follower added.
Caitriona’s episode (titled “Prophecies”) will follow the Frasers as they experience a tragedy while on Fraser’s Ridge. As the family and the tenants living on the Ridge are shaken up, they must lean on one another to move on.
We’re so ready to watch this, and congrats, Caitriona!
