Really struggled’: Broncos could be forced to drop State of Origin and Test star
Broncos coach Michael Maguire has vowed to look at every player in his team when deciding who keeps their spot for their Round 3 clash against Melbourne next week. And he might be forced to make a change to their left edge after it was absolutely burned against Parramatta on Thursday night.
Ezra Mam and Gehamat Shibasaki had a shocker in defence as the Eels stunned the NRL premiers 40-32. Mam missed four tackles and Shibasaki missed five, as Jonah Pezet, Isaiah Iongi and Kelma Tuilagi had a field day on the right side of Parramatta’s attack.

Tuilagi strolled through Mam’s defence for two easy tries in the first half, and Iongi’s first four-pointer would have raised alarm bells for Maguire. Shibasaki was way too far back and didn’t follow Mam when he pushed up, but Mam then virtually stopped and allowed Iongi to run right past him.
Mam seemingly thought Shibasaki was going to make the tackle, but the State of Origin centre was too far back to stop Iongi charging over the line. “They’ve got the edge defence absolutely rattled,” Greg Alexander said on Fox League.
“Ezra Mam is a match-winner but boy he’s been found out defensively on that side. They really have struggled defensively on that left side, Brisbane. They’re all over the place.”
Could Gehamat Shibasaki be facing the axe?
Post-match, Matty Johns, Nathan Hindmarsh and Nate Myles all highlighted Mam and Shibasaki’s poor defence. And it could actually cost Shibasaki his spot because former Melbourne Storm player Grant Anderson is waiting in the wings.
One fan wrote on social media: “Grant Anderson has to get a crack next week with how poor the left edge has been.” Another commented: “Mam and Shibasaki will leak a lot of points this season if they stay a defensive edge.”

It would be a stunning fall from grace for Shibasaki to lose his spot considering he played Origin last year and then made his Test debut for Australia in the Ashes. But with Anderson waiting in the wings, Maguire might need to make a change.
“I’ll go back and watch the tape,” Maguire said in his press conference. “We performed for 20 minutes, we performed pretty well, but it takes 80 minutes to win a game of footy. So I’ll be having a look at each player in the squad.
“It takes a team to have a strong defensive line. We had a few issues there on the left, but as a group and as a team, they all help each other and that’s what a defensive line is. We’re just not hitting the mark there.”
Mam was promoted to the starting side after coming off the bench in Round 1. He’s unlikely to be dropped if Adam Reynolds misses any time due to a rib injury he suffered late in Thursday night’s loss.
