Woman in Romania Finds Live Worm Wriggling from Her Eyelid
A startling medical case in Romania has captured attention worldwide: doctors removed an 11-centimeter, living roundworm from a woman’s eyelid. This rare incident highlights the potential dangers of parasitic infections and the importance of prompt medical attention.
According to the case report in the New England Journal of Medicine, the woman first noticed a hard lump on her right temple about a month earlier. Remarkably, she observed that the lump disappeared just a day before the worm made its way toward her eye. Experts believe the worm likely hatched from a cyst under her skin, which had been asymptomatic until it became mobile.
When she sought ophthalmological help, doctors quickly identified a “mobile lesion” on her eyelid. The lesion appeared as a wriggling worm beneath the skin, accompanied by minor redness and swelling. Such cases, although rare, underscore the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of parasitic infections, especially in regions where exposure to contaminated soil or water is common.
According to parasitology experts, timely intervention can prevent severe complications. If you notice unusual lumps or movement under your skin, seek medical advice immediately to avoid potential health risks.
